Off To An Excellent Start
Exceed And Excel
sires fastest pair at Cranbourne trials
With the new season of
two-year-old racing looming, Cranbourne trials on Monday were naturally a hive
of activity as the sharpest of the new batch of juveniles aimed to prove their
credentials ahead of the big spring races in Melbourne. The message from the
morning was clear: the
Exceed And Excel
are ready to run.
On a dead track, there were eight two-year-old trials over
800m, four for colts and geldings and four for fillies. The results couldn’t
have provided a more emphatic affirmation of Exceed And Excel’s promise, because
he was responsible for the fastest winner of each sex.
First off was Exceedingly Good, a very powerful bay son
of the Listed-placed Snippets mare Common Smytzer. This imposing individual had
realised $400,000 when bought by Lee Freedman at the Easter Yearling Sale in
Sydney, and Freedman must be very happy with the purchase following this
demonstration of ability: under merely gentle encouragement from Corey Brown,
Exceedlingly Good came home one and a half lengths to the good, stopping the
clock at 46.78. This time was 0.79 seconds quicker than that posted by the
winner of the second fastest colts’ trial, and has ensured that Exceedingly Good
will be exceedingly well supported when he makes his debut.
Remarkably, that time was not the fastest of the day, because
one of the fillies ran 46.60 in winning her trial: the Exceed And Excel filly
Sugar Babe. Another inmate of Freedman’s Rye stable, this attractive bright
bay daughter of the Group Two-winning Zeditave mare On Type coasted to the line
under Matthew Allan for a hugely impressive two-length win. Freedman completely
dominated this eye-catchingly fast trial, supplying the first four fillies
across the line, with the runner-up also being a daughter of Exceed And Excel.
This filly, Alnwick, has also to be rated a very exciting prospect as her
pedigree suggests that she will continue to improve as she matures: a $625,000
graduate of the Sydney Easter Sale, she is a daughter of the 2001 AJC Oaks
winner Rose Archway.
With two other Exceed And Excel juveniles – Excelify, a
son of the Kingmambo mare Catherine Howard, and Solar Strike, a daughter
of Solar Circle’s half-sister Unrocel Tap – having also been made the frame in
their trials, this was an extremely good day at the office for the stock of
Exceed And Excel.
| The Race is now on in earnest against EI |
The race is now on in earnest in Newcastle against EI. Surrounding areas, all about 10km away like Heatherbrae, Meadowie and Woodbury have enclosed the Newcastle area with positive tests to Equine Influenza.
All trainers at Newcastle are eagerly awaiting the arrival of much needed vaccination shots (due today) and a lot of luck in the following week to allow the horses to build up immunity to the virus. If horses can get to the end of next weekend Oct 6th/7th without contracting EI, experts are of the belief that they will have built up enough immunity to get through any outbreak of the virus should it arrive at the Broadmeadow racecourse.
Sports Syndications has 2 horses in training with Kris Lees at present, Boncoeur and Our Vegas Dream. These horses and all Sports Syndications syndicated horses are EI free and we take this opportunity to congratulate and thank all staff at Newcastle Racecourse and Empire Park for their hard work and vigilance during these very tough few weeks.
